BMW was the product of three production firms that became Bayerische Motorenwerke in 1917.




Rapp Motorenwerke and Bayerische Flugzeugwerke were separate companies until the year 1918 until they were merged into a new public limited company.

In 1918, Rapp Motorenwerke was restructured and taken on the name BMW as it absorbed the fighting Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (BFW).
